Park History and Overview

Located conveniently along the Kampala-Mbarara highway, Lake Mburo National Park covers 370 square kilometers. The park’s unique history includes a precarious past where wildlife was nearly wiped out multiple times due to attempts to eradicate tsetse flies, conversion of land for ranching, and subsistence poaching by local communities. However, conservation efforts have restored its vibrancy, making it a wildlife haven today.

Established in 1983, Lake Mburo National Park was gazetted to protect its rich biodiversity, which includes zebras, impalas, buffalos, leopards, and over 350 species of birds. The park is underlain by ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks that date back over 500 million years, lending an air of timelessness to this picturesque landscape. The park also features five lakes within its boundaries, part of a larger system of 13 lakes that create a beautiful, interconnected wetland environment. Wetlands cover around 20% of the park, and these ecosystems are home to diverse aquatic life, including hippos and numerous bird species.

Wildlife and Birdlife

• Buffalos and Hippos: The wetlands and lakes support large populations of buffalos and hippos, which can be seen near the water’s edge.

The Ecosystem and Vegetation

Lake Mburo National Park was once predominantly open savannah, but over time, much of the landscape has transformed into woodlands due to the absence of elephants, which would have traditionally controlled vegetation. Today, the park offers a varied landscape that includes rocky ridges, forested gorges, lush riparian woodlands, and papyrus swamps.

Tree species found within the park include acacia, fig, and thorny bush trees, providing habitats for numerous bird and animal species. The swampy areas are rich in aquatic plant life, creating the perfect environment for hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds.
